Never Let Me Go

I attended the “Winning The Game of Life” workshop conducted by Mrs. Joni Ong. She is a very pleasant woman who has her whole life figured out. She has 5 children and owns 2 successful restaurants in Singapore. She knows she has succeeded in life because, and I quote, “I have 5 children whom I love very much”. She asked the class what we think winning the game of life means. Some said money; some said getting the ideal wife. Personally, I think being contented with life is the way for me, which is what Mrs. Joni Ong was trying to tell us. She wanted us to get our lives in order by constantly improving on ourselves and asking for help. She wanted us to set our goals in life. She isn’t wrong. I agreed with her because I think everyone should know what he or she wants in life. I like her. I like happy people.

However, I felt that the whole seminar was rather biased, and thus not discussed in depth. But of course, if there were opposition, the seminar would go out of control. I felt like the whole seminar was arranged just to get the younger generation to marry early. Love is a special thing. The speakers are blessed to have found their soul mate at a young age. But that was before. Our generation faces many of our own problems. We are pressured to do exceptionally well in everything, especially academically. The seminar is just like someone screaming, “hey! This is something else you have to worry about in the near future! HAHA” Although I enjoyed the whole seminar in general, it really isn’t as easy they say it is.

The seminar didn’t exactly change my whole idea of relationships and marriage but it did get me thinking about my future.

I want to be happy in life. I want to get married and see my children grow up happy and healthy. But having children is a whole other story. The next generation will face a lot as well, maybe more than us. So do we really want our kids to suffer? I love kids, I really do. But I’d hate to see them being trampled by the competiveness of the society or to be consumed by the temptations of advancing technology or to eat dirt for lunch just to afford a house. I don’t want to live like that. I sometimes wish that I could hide in a cottage somewhere overseas just to escape from civilization. Fresher air, limit Internet and phone reception.

I don’t know what the objective of this seminar is. But if it wants us students to think about our future, then it has reached out to me.
